Woodstock, New York has long been home to a plethora of artists and artisans, and while it plays host to a number of events celebrating this fact, the Woodstock Jazz Festival will be the area’s first annual gathering focused on America’s original art form—Jazz. Presented by Radio Woodstock and curated by locally based artist-manager, Liz Penta and musician, Ben Perowsky, the event will be held at Bearsville Theater on Saturday, October 4 and will present a who’s who of jazz artists, many who reside in the region, all of whom are renowned worldwide.
With the spirit of improvisation in mind, John Scofield, Jack DeJohnette, John Medeski and Larry Grenadier come together to perform as a quartet. Ben Perowsky, Chris Speed and John Medeski, also known as “Red Cred,” hold down the groove with a project that’s surfaced over the years, but is now getting serious with a recent recording session. Rounding out the evening is the incredibly accomplished pianist/composer, Uri Caine, who will perform solo.
“Launching this festival is an opportunity to bring together some of the most innovative, local and internationally recognized players and bandleaders of today. This town was made for a festival like this,” explains Ben Perowsky. “I’ve been immersed in both music scenes (NYC and Woodstock) for more than 30 years, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to pull this off without an incredible force like Liz Penta. She’s managed some of the most talented, influential artists of this era including Medeski Martin & Wood. Liz and I teamed up this Spring and are both dedicated to creating a festival that will spark a new musical dialogue amongst generations.”
Liz Penta continues: “I love producing events and I have a strong desire to see lots of creative music in my now hometown of Woodstock, NY. Ben and I have been friends since we met in New York City in 1992 when we were deeply involved in the ‘Downtown’ arts scene, me as a promoter and Ben as a musician, so when he came to me with the idea of producing a jazz festival in the mountains the answer was immediately, ‘yes’. We’re starting small with one night in one venue, and we hope to expand next year to include multiple venues plus an educational component.”
The launch of the Woodstock Jazz Festival will be dedicated to the town’s new resident, jazz icon Sonny Rollins. Tickets for the all ages event are on-sale now at radiowoodstock.com.
